Day 2 GSMNP

Day 2 looked like  it was going to be a clear, and perfect for a long day of wading upstream a small mountain stream.

David thought I would like the second creek we explored since it had a decent gradient.  We heartily enjoyed a full day fishing and climbing up a mountain stream that tumbled down among thick laurel and rhododendron under a canopy of tall hardwoods and hemlock.  Several times we needed to climb over some pretty impressive hemlock log jams.

We fished dry/droppers the whole way up and caught wild rainbows and brook trout on both flies.  The higher up we got the bigger the fish got.  Near the end of the day, David hooked the best brook trout of the trip, an impressive specimen for a small mountain stream.

David with a fine GSMNP brook trout!

We didn't go as high up as you guys did but still fished some beautiful areas. I second your statement about the trout being fast; Jason and I lost more than we landed. Beautiful trout you guys landed, thanks for sharing

  3. Mark,
This terrain is sooo gorgeous and the trout (esp. the brookies!) are equally beautiful! The GSMNP and all its many waterways is a gem and a blessing! I hope to make it down there someday! Thanks for sharing this adventure with us!

    1. Dougsden - thanks for the comment! I hope you can experience the GSMNP as it is a wonderfully beautiful place. Being from the Northeast, I never appreciated the ruggedness of the Smokies until I visited it for the first time and it was such a wonderful experience to go back again this year!
